Preventive Dentistry

mission-viejo-dental-cleaning At Sunshine Smiles of Orange County, we emphasize prevention when it comes to dental treatment. Our preventive plans focus on diagnosing dental conditions early, while they are still small and easier to treat.

Our multi-specialist team can treat all of your dental concerns, from cavities to root canals to missing teeth—although we prefer to treat all of these as infrequently as possible. With biannual examinations and cleanings, our practice is dedicated to helping you prevent even the most common dental problems.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

Twice annual checkups provide us with the opportunity to examine your teeth and gums. We will also take x-rays once each year so we can see what is happening beyond what we can see in a visual examination. An oral cancer screening is another important aspect of your dental exam. Early detection is key!

Regardless of the state of your mouth, you can rest assured that we are a judgment-free practice. Our team is friendly and understanding. We will do whatever we can to help you get your oral health back on track.

Routine Cleanings for Disease Prevention

Even if you brush and floss regularly, you will likely develop tartar at your gum line and between your teeth. To keep your gums healthy, this must be removed, and the only way to do so is with special dental tools. A cleaning will not only get rid of this tartar buildup, but our hygienists will also gently polish your teeth for a fresh, smooth feeling afterward.

For most people, cleanings twice each year are adequate. But if we believe you could benefit from a different cleaning schedule, we’ll make a recommendation.

While our hygienists gently clean your teeth, they will be looking for signs of periodontal disease. Many people who develop gum disease don’t even know they have it because there are often no symptoms early on. When it is discovered early, gum disease is treatable. When it goes unnoticed and becomes more severe, it can lead to serious problems, including tooth loss.

Treatments for Additional Prevention

best-mission-viejo-dentistSome people, children in particular, might benefit from additional preventive treatments such as fluoride and sealants. Both of these can help prevent tooth decay.

Fluoride treatments can strengthen your tooth enamel, offering a layer of protection from bacteria. Dental sealants create a barrier between your teeth and bacteria, especially in the deep grooves of the back teeth.

Call to Schedule Your Next Appointment

Whether you are due for a routine cleaning and checkup or it’s simply been a while since your last visit to the dentist, give us a call to make an appointment. We are looking forward to seeing you and making sure you can enjoy a healthy smile for years to come!

Frequently Asked Questions

The numbers mean we are assessing the health of your periodontal bone and gums. These are the structures that support and surround the roots of your teeth. There is a narrow collar of tissue above the bone, which we call a pocket. A normal pocket depth is anywhere between 1 and 3 millimeters.

When pockets become deeper, around 4 to 5 millimeters, they are more difficult to clean. At this depth, the pockets are a warning to us that gum disease may be present, and we need to address the problem before it gets worse.

Anything over 6 millimeters is concerning and needs to be addressed promptly to stop the progression of the periodontal disease. Not doing so can cause severe bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

Because it is impossible to tell whether your own gums are forming pockets, it’s important to visit your dentist twice a year so these measurements can be taken. Gum disease often presents with no symptoms whatsoever, but it is possible to stop the progression in its earliest stages. Once gum disease has taken hold at a more serious level, it can be treated but not cured.
