General Dentistry

best-dentist-mission-viejo Going to the dentist is not on most people’s list of favorite things to do. At Sunshine Smiles of Orange County we realize that, so we go out of our way to ensure that every visit you have with us is a pleasant one.

Not only do we have a number of specialists on our team so you can get all the care you need under one roof, but we use the latest in dental technology to make your time here as comfortable as possible. Going to the dentist does not have to be stressful. And we invite you to come in and see that for yourself!

Comprehensive Preventive Treatment for the Entire Family

Routine cleanings and check-ups are essential to ensure good oral health. During cleanings, we remove bacteria and plaque from hard-to-reach places. Annual exams allow us to note changes in the health of your teeth and gums, meaning we can identify decay or infection in their earliest stages.

Oral cancer screening is another part of your biannual dental exams. Early detection of oral cancer is an important part of your overall wellness.

Our pediatric dentist has the experience and education to ensure that your children’s time with the dentist is always pleasant. Kids who grow up going to the dentist regularly have a tendency to become adults who receive regular dental care.

We are a multi-specialty practice, so your family can get all the treatment they need in one place. Our general dental services include exams and cleanings, fillings, root canals, and extractions. If you need restorative services, we can talk to you about crowns, bridges, and dentures. We also provide full dental implant treatment, from the surgical placement of the implants to the restorative crowns.

When your teeth are healthy but your smile leaves something to be desired, we can talk to you about sprucing it up with cosmetic dentistry treatments such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and invisible braces.

Healthy Gums Are Important for Healthy Teeth

If your gums are not healthy, your teeth won’t be healthy either. In fact, gum disease is the primary reason adults lose their teeth.

family-dentist-mission-viejoGum disease usually starts with the build-up of plaque that hardens into tartar. The tartar, also called calculus, contains bacteria that infect the gums.

Many people are unaware they have gum disease when it's in its earliest stages because there are often no symptoms, although some may experience bleeding gums after brushing and flossing. At this stage, gum disease is referred to as gingivitis and it is highly treatable.

Left untreated, however, gingivitis will progress to a more serious level of gum disease called periodontitis. At this stage, the pockets between the teeth and gums have deepened and infection is present. Gum disease at this stage cannot be cured, but it does need to be treated. Your dentist will recommend regular treatment, both in office and at home, to protect against further gum recession and bone loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

That is certainly an option, but it is not necessarily the best solution. It is our goal with any procedure to keep it as noninvasive as possible. Generally, the sooner we address an issue after it is caught, the better the final result.

Usually with teeth, when we reach the point of experiencing discomfort, the problem is more advanced and requires more extensive treatment.

There are times that something such as a superficial crack in the tooth or a cavity that is just beginning may not be as bad underneath. If we are suspicious about a potential problem, we will sometimes recommend following the tooth closely and seeing if the issue progresses at all.

We always attempt to err on the side of being conservative with treatment. But when it appears a problem has progressed too far, it is important to meet it head on to prevent it from becoming more of a problem.

Staying on top of small dental issues to make sure they don’t progress is another reason why it is so important to visit your dentist twice each year for a full examination.
