At times it is necessary for children to be sedated in order to receive their dental treatment. Sedation may be deemed the best option for your child after detailed communication between you and Dr. Kalantari. At Sunshine Smiles there are two types of sedation dentistry that are offered: Nitrous Oxide/Minimal Sedation, and General Anesthesia/Full Sedation.
Nitrous Oxide/ Minimal Sedation
For those children that are slightly anxious and need a little help to get through needed treatment, nitrous oxide can be a helpful resource. Nitrous oxide can help to relax your child but will not make them fully sedated and asleep. Your child will still be aware of what is happening throughout the procedure and will be able to communicate effectively. Because your child will still be awake, they will require local anesthetic/tooth numbing for most procedures. You can read a little bit more about the safety of nitrous oxide by reading our blog post on the topic.
General Anesthesia/Full Sedation
For children that have severe dental anxiety, have numerous treatment needs, or for those patients where nitrous oxide is not effective; full sedation may be required. If full sedation is recommended, Dr. Kalantari will first communicate the indications and expectations with you, review the patient's medical history in full detail, and answer any questions you may have.
Dr. Kalantari has many years of experience with sedation dentistry under general anesthesia. She worked on both healthy and special needs children under general anesthesia at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kasnas City, Missouri for over 5 years. She now teams up with Dr. Shar Alikhani M.D. to deliver the highest quality dental anesthesia for your child.
Dr. Alikhani completed his anesthesia training at Harvard Medical School and went on to serve as the chief of pediatric anesthesia at the Children's Hospital Of Orange County at Mission. Since that time, Dr. Alikhani founded Mobi Surg, a state of the art surgery center, where he continues to serve the anesthesia needs of the children of Orange County.
In combination with Dr. Alikhani, Dr. Kalantari can complete all your child's dental needs while they are safely asleep.
