These Invisalign accessories will help make your clear aligner journey a smooth one!

As I have been moving along in my own Invisalign journey, I have been keeping tabs on the accessories that have helped me the most with the idea of sharing my advice and the time is finally here!  My own journey started back in September, 23 trays later and I am so close to concluding the process!

Being a dentist, you may be surprised to know that I held out for quite a long time on the whole “braces” thing.  When I was younger there was no extra money for braces and by the time I was older I loved my smile and felt no rush to change it.  So what prompted me to start Invisalign?  Like many other journeys in my life, my husband was the one to give me a little nudge! And now, seeing how much my smile has changed for the better, I’m so glad he did!  My husband is a Silver Invisalign provider and gets excellent results, so I knew I was in good hands, and I also knew that going through the experience myself could make me more empathetic to my own patients. And so, I embraced the journey, but also made notes along the way to be able to help others on their own Invisalign journey.

So here they are, the 6 best accessories that I think everyone going through the Invisalign process should have! Hope you enjoy these tips!

Chapstick

I will not lie, the first week of starting my Invisalign was a rough one.  Due to the attachments placed on my teeth, both the inside and outside of my lips were chapped and split. It was at this point that I found myself placing chapstick on my lips around the clock to provide relief.  After about a week things got a ton better, but I still find myself having dry lips in general when wearing my retainers so I make sure to always have my chapstick on hand!

OrthoMunchies

Munchies are basically small “Y” shaped chew toys that can not only help alleviate pressure discomfort but also help the retainers to seat fully. There are several brands out there that are similar however I feel this particular brand is the best due to the quality and thickness of the tool.  Another great thing that this tool delivers is the ability to accelerate the tooth movement by engaging the aligners more effectively on the teeth.  This can therefore produce more optimal Invisalign results!

* You can ask your dentist if they have any on hand to give you!

Pul Tool

I was introduced to this handy aligner tool early on in my Invisalign journey and it was particularly helpful in the beginning when I was adjusting to taking out my aligners.  This tool is multi functional with a “hook type” end that helps to dislodge and remove your aligners from your mouth.  There is also a chew type feature in the middle which can help you to fully seat your aligners similar to the Munchie tool mentioned above.  What I love most about this tool is that it eliminates having to stick your fingers inside your mouth to remove your aligners, so no yucky germs!

Extra Retainer Cases

So again I’m going to be honest with you, and tell you that in the beginning I threw away my aligners when they were wrapped up in a napkin. At the time I only have one retainer case and if it wasn’t with me at the time for whatever reason, I would simply put my aligners into a napkin…. bad choice!  Since that time I bought a few extra retainer cases from Amazon to have on hand and now I keep one in my car, purse, bathroom, and kitchen.  Now I never have an excuse for not putting my aligners in a case when they are out of my mouth!

Retainer Brite Tablets

Depending on how long you are asked to wear each set of aligners, it is likely that your aligners will need a good cleaning every once in a while. Typically I just brush my aligners in the morning and evening, just like I would my teeth. But in the beginning when I was wearing my aligners for a few weeks at a time I would be sure to give them a throughout cleaning with a retainer cleaner at least once a week.  These antibacterial retainer tablets are easy to use just drop one tablet into a cup of water, add your aligners for 15 minutes, rinse, and wear!

Foldable Toothbrush + Travel Toothpaste

Just like you will find yourself always needing a retainer case on hand, you will also find yourself needing a toothbrush and toothpaste quite often.  Whether its for brushing your aligners before putting them back in, or you are craving a fresh feeling in your mouth, trust me you want a toothbrush and toothpaste handy at all times!  A foldable toothbrush makes it both easy and sanitary so that you can keep it in your car, purse, pocket or wherever you go!

Hope these ideas help you on your path to a straight, amazing SMILE! Best wishes to you along your Invisalign journey!
